Alleged hit-run driver charged after pedestrian left to die

A MAN has been arrested and charged after mowing down and killing a pedestrian in a hit-run crash in Far North Queensland.

It happened in the small town of Dimbulah, about 114km inland of Cairns, during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police said they were called to reports of a injured man lying on Burke Development Road, 100m east of Minsini Road, about 3.40am.

When officers arrived at the scene, however, the 18-year-old man from Mareeba was already dead.

The young man had allegedly been run over by vehicle and left to die in the middle of the road.

Following investigations, the alleged driver – a 34-year-old local man – was later found and arrested.

He has since been charged with driving without due care and attention causing death and failing to remain at a road incident and assist an injured person.

The 34-year-old is due to appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court on Monday, October 15.

Investigations by the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing.
