Alleged killer hands himself in to Police after 20-years on the run

A MAN is due to face a Sydney court on Thursday, charged with the murder of a man in Redfern, more than 20 years ago.

Police say the now 41-year-old turned himself in to officers at Redfern Police Station on Wednesday morning.

It’s alleged he was part of a group that attacked two men on James Street in Redfern on 27 January 1998.

Police say the victim, Robert McPherson, and an associate were approached by at least six men, who were armed with baseball bats, a chain, a stick, and a knife.

Mr McPherson was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he later died.

His alleged killer, who is yet to be identified, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with Mr McPherson’s murder.

He is also accused of an armed robbery of a bank at Botany on 6 March 2002.

He has been refused bail to appear at Central Local Court today.
