Alleged speeding driver arrested after swimming into ocean to avoid police

Police have arrested a man who tried to escape them by swimming into the ocean.

The pursuit started around 10.30pm last night, after officers noticed a Mercedes Benz allegedly speeding along Landy Drive in Warilla.

They attempted to stop the car, before it went through a stop sign.

Officers pursued the vehicle briefly until it ran a red light.

A short time later police found the car again, where occupants were seen running from it.

The dog squad was called in to help scour nearby bush land, where a man was spotted entering the ocean and swimming towards a point.

The Marine Area Command, along with the Toll Ambulance helicopter attended and assisted with the search.

About 45 minutes later the man located in the ocean and was guided back to shore by the helicopter to waiting police.

The 21-year-old man was arrested and taken to Shellharbour Hospital where he remains under police guard.

A woman was later arrested at her home and is currently assisting with inquiries.

Investigations are continuing.
