An alleged thief has proved desperate times call for desperate measures, after he broke into a home and then tried to escape on a ride-on lawn mower.
The 30-year-old man threw a brick into the window of a home at Dapto just before 7.00am yesterday, before stealing a Ford Festiva from the property.
An eagle-eyed neighbour saw what was going on and attempted to stop the man by holding onto the vehicle, and was dragged for about 40m, before the car crashed into a trailer.

The neighbour was treated at the scene for minor injuries, while the man fled the scene on foot.
However just a short time later, the man allegedly broke into a second home at Dapto and attempted to drive off on a ride-on lawn mower, before fleeing on foot.
He was arrested by officers nearby, before being taken to hospital after allegedly ingesting an unknown substance.
The man has now been charged with aggravated break and enter, aggravated break and enter with intent, injuries by furious driving, drive manner dangerous, steal motor vehicle, and possess house-breaking implements.
He was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court today.
