Gunman who sparked Surfers lockdown refused bail

UPDATE @ 12.30PM | A man accused of sparking a lockdown in Surfers Paradise after shots were allegedly fired, will remain behind bars.

Heavily armed Police swarmed Hamilton Ave near Q1 around 1pm on Tuesday afternoon after two men got into a fight.

Daniel Robert Barquin, 38, is accused of pulling out a gas-powered BB gun and firing several shots.

The Varsity Lakes man was arrested in nearby bushes a short time later.

Barquin was charged with one count each of dangerous conduct with a weapon and possess dangerous drugs.

He fronted Southport Magistrates Court today where he was refused bail.

He’ll return to court on June 2.

UPDATE @ May 18, 6.15 AM | A MAN has been charged after shots were allegedly fired outside Q1 Resort, sparking a brief lockdown in the heart of Surfers Paradise.

Police raced to Hamilton Avenue around 1pm on Tuesday following reports two men had gotten into a fight before one allegedly pulled out a firearm and fired several shots.

Both men fled the scene, with residents and workers in the area told to stay indoors while heavily armed police swarmed the area.

The alleged gunman was found hiding in nearby bushes a short time later, with police finding a firearm on him.

The 38-year-old from Varisty Lakes has been charged with one count each of dangerous conduct with a weapon and possess dangerous drugs.

He was refused police bail and will appear in Southport Magistrates Court today.

It’s understood Police are still looking for the other person involved in the alleged fight, but there is no further threat to public safety.

Investigations continue.

EARLIER @ May 17, 2.00 PM | A man has been arrested after shots were fired outside Q1 in Surfers Paradise.

Police were called to Hamilton Avenue around 1pm on Tuesday afternoon after two men got into a fight.

One of the men reportedly pulled out a firearm and fired several shots.

Both men fled while heavily armed Police swarmed the area, cordoning off nearby streets.

The alleged gunman was found in nearby bushes around 1.30pm with a search uncovering a firearm.

He was taken into custody.

Police are still searching for the second man involved in the fight but insist there is no threat to public safety.
