Armed man on the run following deadly attack on France retirement home

A MAJOR manhunt is underway for an armed man who allegedly burst into a missionaries retirement home and “assassinated” a resident in southwestern France.

The man was reportedly armed with a knife and a sawn-off shotgun when he stormed the retirement home in Montferrier-sur-Lez, about 10km north of the French city of Montpellier, which houses approximately 60 monks.

Police were called to the scene and on entering the building reportedly found the body of a woman who had allegedly been stabbed to death.

“One woman, a resident, was assassinated,” a local official told Reuters.

“The security forces have evacuated the residents, about 60, who are safe and sound.”

There are unconfirmed reports a second body was also found inside the building.

A major manhunt is now underway to locate the suspect who is believed to have fled the scene before security forces arrived.

Details remain sketchy at this stage, however, early reports suggest the incident is not terror-related.
