Arson charge after fire destroys Ipswich business

A Queensland man will face court on Monday, charged with setting fire to a building in Ipswich, west of Brisbane.

It’s alleged the 39-year-old started the blaze on a verandah of the unoccupied East Street property around 2.15am Saturday.

Witnesses called 000 as they saw huge flames engulf the double storey structure.

The fire destroyed the old building while causing minor damage to the neighbouring Centrelink offices.

In a statement, Police confirmed they arrested the man about 20 minutes after the fire was ignited, “with the assistance of Safe City footage”.

He was charged with one count of arson.
