Arts Centre Gold Coast launches 2016 season

The Arts Centre Gold Coast last night revealed their stellar program of 23 events set to grace the stage in 2016.

Featuring a mix of Australia’s finest musicians, dancers, actors, singers and acrobats, the sophisticated programming means high-end artistic experiences will be accessible for local audiences.

The works promise to take audiences on journeys across new worlds and emerge from the theatre with new views and new perspectives.

Performing Arts Manager Brad Rush says:”I believe that our local audiences should have the chance to experience a high level of excellence, engagement and diversity that you would find in a capital city. Gold Coast is being recognised as a significant contributor and participant in arts and culture nationally.

“Our programming delivers audiences a variety of both contemporary and traditional works. In 2016 we will deliver and incredible diverse program which includes dance, theatre, opera, and music, creating stories that engage and transform our patrons.”

Queensland Theatre Company will kick off the 2016 season with Quartet, a devilishly funny journey into old age, told with tenderness, grace, hope – and above all, no self-pity.

Motherland intertwines the sweeping true stories of three very different women from different times, united in the heartache of exile from their homelands. Brisbane playwright Katherine Lyall-Watson has penned an intricately researched historical drama about how world-changing events can ripple out and take a toll on everyday lives.

The Arts Centre Gold Coast was thrilled to announce the production of Mary Poppins. The much-loved Disney film comes to life on stage in a musical for the whole family in June 2016. Featuring the finest local talent, this heart-warming magical musical adventure is not to be missed.

Sydney Dance Company’s CounterMove explores luminescence and life in a double bill that will enchant, compel and amuse with exhilarating physical dance by some of Australia’s finest.

Opera lovers won’t miss Opera Queensland’s performance of The Barber of Seville. Celebrating the 200th anniversary of the first performance, this delicious dose of comedy and effervescent music, is the perfect way to say – Happy Birthday Figaro!

Il Ritorno is a ground-breaking new work fusing Circa’s world-renowned stripped-back acrobatics with baroque opera, which played to sold out audiences in Brisbane.

Dirtsong features the talents of Black Arm Band, a collective of renowned Indigenous singers, musicians, performers and actors from across Australia, who are dedicated to showcasing and celebrating the very best of contemporary Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music, culture, experience and identity.

A violent exploration of the thin line that separates love and jealousy, Belle Shakespeare’s Othello is a relentless journey of vicious passion.

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) returns, bringing a dynamic orchestration, captivating rhythm and a smouldering finale with Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird. The concert will also feature some of the Gold Coast’s finest young musicians.

The Space, a place for intimate and evocative contemporary theatre, features three dramatic productions including Waiting for Godot by Mercury Wings Theatre Company, Sugarland by Australian Theatre for Young People and Viral a powerful new true work written and devised by Shock Therapy Productions, in a City of Gold Coast initiative.

The Family Series offers heart-warming and artistic theatre for children and their grown-ups, with The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show, Snugglepot & Cuddlepie and more.

The Daytime Program offers the best of daytime entertainment, including Always… Patsy Cline, a musical based on the true story of legendary country singer Patsy Cline’s friendship with a fan. Also on offer is The 7 Sopranos Valentine’s Tour. Prepare to be taken on a musical journey through classic songs and moving operatic melodies.
