Aussie Rugby 7’s skipper in hospital after one punch attack

Australian Rugby Sevens captain James Stannard is reportedly recovering in hospital after an alleged one punch attack in Sydney.

It’s understood the 35-year-old was standing outside a kebab shop on Coogee Bay Road, Coogee, at around 3.00am on Friday when he was punched in the head in an unprovoked attack.

He fell back and hit his head on the pavement.

He was treated for head injuries before being taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

The 22-year-old offender tried to run from the scene but was stopped by witnesses, who detained him until police arrived.

The British National was taken to Maroubra Police Station and is being charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He will be granted strict conditional bail and is expected to appear at Waverley Local Court Thursday 19 April.
