Steve Smith smashed a brilliant 90 off 53 that should have been enough to see Australia home, before the tourists fell in a heap at the death, losing 5-16 in the space of 14 balls to fall five agonising runs short.

Needing 12 to win off the final over, debutant Marcus Stoinis hesitated first ball when he should have been coming back for a second run, leaving batting partner Matthew Wade stranded and the Australians scattered.
