Australian sailor found dead in the Middle East

The Defence Force has confirmed that an Australian sailor has been found dead during a stint in the Middle East.

The man died after being found unconscious during shore leave in Muscat, Oman according to Defence.

In a statement the Defence Force said “it is with deep regret the Australian Defence Force can confirm the death of a Royal Australian Navy Sailor in the Middle East”.


“The sailor was deployed on Operation Manitou in HMAS Darwin.

“Defence is providing support to the sailor’s shipmates and family.”  Relatives have asked that the media respect their privacy.

The statement went on to say that “the Australian Defence Force Investigative Service is assisting local authorities with investigations.  As such it is not appropriate to provide further details at this time”.

It finished “Defence extends its deepest sympathy to the sailor’s family and friends”.

The victim’s name has not been released.
