Australian woman dies after plunging 300m from NZ mountain

An Australian woman has died after falling 300 metres from a mountain in New Zealand.

The 29-year-old was found by rescue teams in a critical condition when they responded to an emergency location beacon set off on the Eugenie Glacier in Mt Cook National Park this morning.

She had fallen from the slopes of The Footstool, a 2764m tall peak.

The woman was taken by helicopter to the Aoraki Mount Cook Search and Rescue Base, and died shortly after arriving.

Initial police investigations suggest that the fall was an accident.

The woman’s name has not been released as police are working to inform her family.
