Australia’s Covid-19 vaccine rollout enters next phase

The next phase of Australia’s Covid-19 vaccine rollout begins today, with millions of people now eligible to get the jab.

Phase 1B will see over 1,000 GPs across the country able to administer the jab, including around 30 clinics here on the Gold Coast.

However, health officials have warned there could be delays to the rollout, with flooding affecting the distribution to some areas.

GPs are also calling for calm from those seeking to book in to get the jab after already being inundated with phone calls last week.

But the national supply will soon be boosted, after Australia’s drug regulator formally approved local production of the AstraZeneca formula in Melbourne.

They’re hoping to produce a million doses of the vaccine every week, which will hopefully take the pressure off our reliance on shipments from Europe.

It’s understood that around 6 million people are eligible for the jab under phase 1B, which includes everyone over the age of 70 and those with chronic illnesses.
