“Australia’s ice epidemic a health problem, not a law and order issue”

AUSTRALIA’S National ‘ICE’ Taskforce will reportedly focus on increasing drug treatment and eduction rather than policing when it delivers its recommendations on how to best tackle the rising epidemic this week.

The Courier Mail newspaper reports the taskforce, headed by former Victoria Police commissioner Ken Lay, will identify the current scourge as being a health problem, rather than a law and order issue.

The advice differs to that given by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott who had labelled the problem as a criminal matter and reportedly rejected a Parliamentary Library report on the drug suggesting treatment was more cost-effective than policing.
