Australia’s virus death toll rises to 80

The number of coronavirus deaths in Australia has risen again this morning.

A 90-year-old man has died in Tasmania, becoming the country’s 80th person to pass away from the virus.

Health Authorities confirmed the elderly man died at the Mersey Community Hospital in Latrobe overnight.

He is the tenth person to die from COVID-19 in Tasmania.

“On behalf of the Tasmanian government I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends and loved ones,” Premier Peter Gutwein said.

“To the northwest community, which I know to be a tight-knit community, my thoughts are with you all.”

The national death toll now stands at 80.
