Axe-wielding man shot dead during confrontation with police
A MAN has been shot dead after allegedly running at police while armed with an axe on the NSW Central Coast overnight.
Just before 10.30pm, officers were called to a house on The Entrance Road near Terrigal Drive in Erina, following reports of a dispute between neighbours.
Upon arrival, police noticed flames coming from the side of the house with two officers forcing entry through the front door.
A 45-year-old man wielding an axe allegedly threatened them, before he was shot.
He was treated at the scene by paramedics, but died a short time later.
A critical incident investigation has now been launched, with detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation will be subject to independent review.
