She was treated at the scene but sadly died on the way to hospital, police said.
In a statement on Saturday night, police initially said that the child had been attacked by the family’s pet rottweiler.
The child’s family, however, has since spoken out about the horrific ordeal and say the dog was not the family’s pet.
The child’s aunt took to Facebook to explain the incident overnight, revealing that the girl was being pushed in a pram by her mother when “someone else’s” rottweiler jumped a fence and attacked the pair.
“This was my niece that died today… she was actually being walked by her mother in a pram on the way to her granny’s house just one block away,” Ida Boney wrote.
“There are no words to describe a scene where a mother is fighting with every ounce of her being to save her baby girl.
“The dog in question actually cleared a fenced yard (someone else’s dog not our family’s).
“I really don’t care what the breed of dog it was.
“Our family have lost our baby girl who never got a chance to live her life.”
Police said the Rottweiler was found in the backyard of the Greaves Street home and seized Gwydir Shire Council rangers.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
