Beach closed after man bitten by shark in NSW

A MAN has been taken to hospital after being bitten by what is believed to have been a shark at a beach in NSW.

Police said the 31-year-old man was surfing at Birubi Beach at Anna Bay in Port Stephens around 9.30am on Saturday when he was bitten on the foot by what he described to be a shark.

The man was able to swim to short and contact emergency services.

Police said he escaped the encounter with only minor puncture wounds to one of his feet.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital as a precaution.

Birubi Beach has since been closed to the public and will remain off limits until further notice.

Police are working with the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries to investigate the incident.
