Beach club coming to the Gold Coast this summer

Council has voted overwhelmingly in favour of trialling a beach club on the Gold Coast this summer.

The trial will run over December and January on the terrace at Kurrawa Beach.

Council will now call for expressions of interest for the beach club which is set to include a licensed bar, kitchen and live entertainment with the club to be furnished with sun lounges, cabanas and day beds.

There will also be the opportunity for the beach club to offer free ticketed events, family-friendly activities, exercise classes and public art and cultural experiences.

Mayor Tom Tate says beach bars have proved popular during Bleach festivals with locals calling for it to stay.

“So many people walking by wanted to walk in and ask why couldn’t it be permanent and that’s the sort of activities that I was envisaging,” Mayor Tate said.

“If it works, well we can look at it further. If it doesn’t work well we trialled it and whether people don’t like it we kill it off.”

Councillor Herman Vorster says it will be another tourist offering to help the city recover from the pandemic.

“As we emerge from the terrible, terrible time that COVID has brought to the tourism sector, it’s really important that we look at every possible opportunity to support operators and create some excitement again in the Gold Coast product,” Councillor Vorster told Tuesday’s Council meeting.

“It will give us in my view an opportunity to see not only what the level of local support is for a beach club but importantly whether visitors to the city relish the opportunity to have a sneaky bevvie or do some Tai Chi in a picturesque setting very much on the sand itself.”

Division 10 Councillor Darren Taylor says people are crying out for new experiences like a beach club.

“We already see that the Burleigh Pavilion, even the new Cali, it’s a type of venue that people are looking for at the moment,” Councillor Taylor said.

“So I think the trial is going to be a great way to actually see what people want and what they can get with a beach clubhouse.

“I think we’ve got such a long expansive oceanfront that we can take advantage of.”
