Big winnings on The Block

The Block’s ‘golden couple’ found themselves $755,000 richer last night after they were crowned champions of The Blocktagon.

Newcastle’s Dean and Shay took out the top spot after their penthouse apartment sold for $2.3 million – $655,000 above its reserve price. They then scored an extra $100,000 in prizemoney for netting the most profit of any auction on the night.

The couple was one of five duos who spent the past three months transforming an octagonal-shaped former motel into a luxurious, state-of-the-art apartment complex. in Melbourne.

Chatting to 1029 Hot Tomato’s Flan & Emily Jade this morning, Shay said she and Dean still can’t believe they won: “It’s hasn’t sunk in yet. We’re trying to pull it together and fathom what’s actually happened and enjoy the moment. We’re certainly feeling pretty overwhelmed and blessed at the moment.”

The couple went with a scandi style for the apartment, which Emily Jade noted was very popular at the moment. The breakfast host was curious if it was their true style though, to which Shay replied: “We probably luxed up that scandi feel a little bit. Dean and I are probably a bit more raw, we don’t mind that scandi look but we are bit more mid-century with a touch of industrial.”

She continued: “We were just trying to go with something that was a bit more appealing to a broad market because it was always about that bigger picture of the auction. I guess we were being a bit strategic there.”

Everyone did well on this season of the renovation show, with a huge total of $2,539,000 taken home by the five couples.

West Australian siblings Luke and Ebony just missed out on the top prize by $15,000. In the final auction of the night, their sub-penthouse apartment sold for $2.2 million, $640,000 above its reserve price of $1.560 million

Third place was awarded to the loveable larrikins, Townsville’s Caro and Kingi. In the first auction of the night, their level two apartment sold for $1.735 million, awarding them a profit of $405,000.

Melbourne’s Andrew and Whitney, who revealed on the program that they have recently gone their separate ways, took home $390,000 between them. In the fourth auction of the night, their apartment raced past its reserve of $1.4 million before selling for $1.79 million.

And in the second auction of the night, Gold Coast glamour mums Suzi and Vonni walked away with a $349,000 profit when their luxe apartment sold for $1.829 million.
