Spare a thought for Santa’s little elves at Australia Post, who say they’re expecting today to be the biggest delivery day in the nation’s history – with over two million parcels moving through their network this Monday.
Bob Black is the company’s Executive General Manager Parcels and CEO of Star Track. He says the increase in numbers is driven by the boom in online shopping, and that Australia Post has already been processing over one million parcels every day as consumers take advantage of pre-Christmas sales and a surge in parcels from China, the UK and the USA.
“We’re finding close to 30 per cent of all online purchases occur in the three months leading up to Christmas, and that’s on the back of a 15.9 per cent growth in online shopping this year,” said Mr Black.

“Of those purchases, fashion and toys and games are the most popular purchases.”
Mr Black says Australia Post will keep their post officers open longer in the next fortnight to Christmas, and have begun evening and weekend deliveries of parcels.
