Superintendent Chris Craner says a difficult operation to recover the bodies is now underway and is expected to take some time.
“It’s steep, it’s hectic, we’ve got police coming in from the low side, police trekking down from the high side and the consideration of the helicopter,” Supt Craner said.
“It’s a treacherous, dangerous area we need to get to to respectfully get these people out.
A crime scene remains in place as forensic officers scour the area.
Police won’t speculate on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
“It’s going to be devastating for the family and my thoughts are also with the emergency services here today.”
