Body found in burnt-out ute on dirt road in southern NSW

A BODY has been found in a burnt-out ute on the outskirts of Merungle Hill in the NSW Riverina.

A motorcyclist made the grisly discovery as he was heading to work just before 7 o’clock this morning.

He came across the single-cab ute smouldering on the side of a farm access road near Tabain and Deveril roads.

As he looked inside the vehicle, he located the body in the driver’s seat. The age and gender of the deceased remains unclear.

Police said the vehicle did not appear to be involved in a crash prior to catching fire.

Detectives and forensic police from the Griffith Local Area Command are working to identify the person and establish the cause of the blaze.

Merungle Hill is a small village community situated about three kilometres north of Yanco and five kilometres south-east of Leeton in the central north part of the Riverina.
