Police were called and located the body which they say appears to have been decomposing on the river bank for “a number of days”.
Superintendent David Hutchinson said it was too early to say whether police were dealing with a murder, suicide or an accident.
He said it was also unclear whether the deceased was male or female.
“We are unable to say at this point in time even what the gender is, the body has slightly decomposed. We are treating it as suspicious obviously and we hope to find out more about the deceased,” Superintendent Hutchinson told the ABC.
“The area around the body is being examined [and] we have the water police assisting us as well.”
A major crime scene has been set-up with Kirkin Road North is closed to traffic as detectives continue to investigate the suspicious death.
The body has been removed from the scene and will undergo a post-mortem examination to determine the gender and cause of death.
