Body of newborn baby found in NSW backyard

The body of a newborn baby has been discovered abandoned in the backyard of a home in a suburb in Newcastle.

Paramedics were called to home on Church St in Stockton after the body was found just after 7am this morning.

Police have shut down the street and set up a crime scene as they investigate the discovery.

A post mortem examination will be carried out to try and determine the exact age of the baby and the cause of death.

Police say they have grave concerns for the welfare of the mother as she may need urgent medical treatement.

They’re appeal for public help in identifying the mother.
