The driver of the SUV, a 47-year-old Ballarat woman, and her young son stopped to assist and were uninjured during the crash.

The 14-year-old Melton boy was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with life threatening injuries.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses to the crash, in particular three associates of the injured boy, to contact police.

The outbound lanes of the Western Freeway were closed between Coburns Road and Hopetoun Park Road interchanges as forensic teams examined the scene.
