Boy, 14, critical after being hit by car in Victoria

A teenage boy has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a car at Melton, west of Melbourne overnight.

Police say a black Kia SUV was travelling west along the Western Freeway when it struck the 14-year-old boy between Coburns and Clarkes roads just after 11pm.

The driver of the SUV, a 47-year-old Ballarat woman, and her young son stopped to assist and were uninjured during the crash.

The 14-year-old Melton boy was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with life threatening injuries.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses to the crash, in particular three associates of the injured boy, to contact police.

The outbound lanes of the Western Freeway were closed between Coburns Road and Hopetoun Park Road interchanges as forensic teams examined the scene.
