Boy, 15, struck and killed by lightning in NSW

UPDATE: POLICE have confirmed a boy who was killed after being struck by lightning near Port Stephens was 15-years-old.

In a statement to media, police said witnesses claimed the teen was hit by the bolt of electricity around 5.10pm as he walked out of the surf at One Mile Beach, off Hannah Parade. 

Despite desperate attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. 


An investigation is underway into the incident and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

EARLIER: A TEENAGE boy has tragically died after being struck by lightning on the New South Wales central coast.

The boy, said to be aged 15, went into cardiac arrested after he was reportedly struck at One Mile Beach near Port Stephens (north of Newcastle) around 5pm EDT.

It’s understood he was standing in shallow water at the time.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter responded, but the boy was unable to be revived despite the desperate attempts by first responders.

A line of severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar sweeping over the area around the same time of the accident.

There’s no further information available at this time.
