Boy, 17, makes 880km journey to Gold Coast after escaping police custody

A TEENAGE fugitive has managed to somehow travel a remarkable 880km to the Gold Coast without being caught after escaping police custody in central Queensland last week.

The 17-year-old managed to give police the slip while he was being escorted from a courthouse back to the watchhouse in Emerald on Tuesday afternoon, August 15.

The teen sprinted into a stranger’s backyard and a stole a white Nissan Navara which was found dumped at Springsure several hours later.


Following a week-long statewide manhunt, the 17-year-old was located and arrested in Nerang yesterday.

He was charged with six offences including escape lawful custody, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving and stealing.

The teen fronted Southport Magistrates Court where he was remanded in custody to reappear on September 13.
