FIRST: DETECTIVES are investigating the death of a young woman who died in suspicious circumstances at a house in Sydney’s west overnight.

Police were called to conduct a welfare check on the 21-year-old woman at a home on Derby Street in Kingswood shortly after midnight. When they arrived, they found the woman clinging to life.

Paramedics were called but despite their desperate attempts to keep her alive, she died at the scene.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Superintendent Greg Peters confirmed the young woman’s death is being treated as suspicious.

A 21-year-old man believed to have been the woman’s boyfriend was detained at the scene and remains in police custody, assisting detectives with their inquiries.

It’s understood police are investigating whether the couple had been arguing at the time the woman died.

Neighbour Kevin Keys told the ABC the 21-year-old man ran to his house and asked him to call an ambulance.

Mr Keys said the man told him that “[the woman] was sitting on the lounge…she felt sick and passed out and hit her head on the coffee table” after the pair had returned from a date.

Superintendent Peters said police were waiting on the results of a post-mortem to determine how the woman died. It is expected to be completed tomorrow.

A strike force has been set up to investigating the circumstance surrounding the suspicious death.

Detectives have established a crime scene at the home and are conducting a canvass of the area.
