Bravehearts founder to run for Logan City mayor

Child protection advocate and 2015 Queensland Australian of the Year, Hetty Johnston, has set her sights on running for Logan mayor.

Ms Johnston, who founded Bravehearts on the Gold Coast in 1997, is expected to formally announce her position on Wednesday morning.

Ms Johnston committed herself to campaigning against child abuse after learning her own daughter had been sexually assaulted.

However, by choosing to run in the Logan City Council elections next March, she will have to step down as chief executive of Bravehearts next January.

Her announcement comes after current mayor, Pam Parker, revealed she wouldn’t contest the next council election.

Mc Johnston has tried to get into politics before, running as an independent for the Springwood electorate in the state election in 2001.

She lost to Labor’s Barbara Stone.

She also made a bid to become a Queensland Senate candidate in 2004.
