Brazilian woman allegedly attempted to import 4kg of cocaine into Sydney

A 27-year-old woman has been arrested at Sydney International Airport after allegedly attempting to import around 4 kilograms of cocaine.

Australian Border Force officers selected the Brazilian national for a baggage examination after she arrived on a flight from Dubai on Monday night.

“ABF will allege the woman’s suitcase was unusually heavy when emptied and subjected the bag to further examination and x-ray screening,” Authorities said in a statement.

“A white powdery substance was detected concealed in the suitcase lining. The substance was subjected to presumptive tests, which returned positive results for cocaine.”

The woman was arrested by Australian Federal police and taken to NSW Police Mascot Station where she was charged with  importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

The woman appeared in Sydney Local Court on Tuesday where bail was opposed.
