Armed man triggers emergency response in Surfers Paradise

UPDATE at 5:00 PM | A MAN allegedly armed with a handgun has been arrested in Surfers Paradise.

Scores of police swooped on the Glitter Strip around 4pm on Wednesday following reports of an armed man at the Beachcomber apartment tower.

Police declared an emergency situation and began clearing the Hanlan Street hotel as a precaution.


Residents and tourists were told to stay away from the area while officers responded to the incident.

Thankfully, the man was arrested without incident shortly before 5pm.

He is believed to have been armed with a handgun.

Fortunately no one was injured and the emergency declaration has since been revoked.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet clear.

FIRST at 4:30 PM | AN EMERGENCY situation has been declared in Surfers Paradise following reports of an armed man at a hotel.

Police have swooped on a hotel on Hanlan Street and are evacuating neighbouring units as a precaution.

Residents and tourists are being urged to stay away from the area.
