Heavily armed police storm Crown Casino amid reports of ‘bomb threat’

UPDATE at 5:00 PM AEST | MELBOURNE’S Crown Casino has been evacuated amid reports of a bomb threat.

Hundreds of people were ushered out of the Southbank building around 3.30pm AEDT after a 55-year-old man with a backpack began behaving erratically, Victoria Police said.

There are reports the man claimed to have an explosive device in his bag. Police said it was the way that he was “acting and behaving” which raised concern and multiple calls were made to police.


Dozens of armed police, including officers from the city’s Special Operations Group, stormed the building and arrested the man without incident.

“Officers were called in relation to a male with a backpack acting erratically, ” Victoria Police said.

“Police responded, the area was evacuated and a short time later a 55-year-old male was taken into custody.

“There have been no injuries to the suspect or to police or to the public as a result of this incident.”

Police said the 55-year-old man did not resist arrest and “complied with police requests”.

Dozens of police remain on the scene conducting safety checks before the area can be declared safe.

“It’s an ongoing police investigation and incident which is not concluded so we are asking the public to stay away,” Victoria Police said.

“There has been nothing found in the backpack as yet. It is yet to be cleared … safety and security checks are being conducted”

General duties police and officers from the city’s Critical Incident Response team, Special Operations Group and Bomb Response Unit remain on the scene.

Crown Casino released a statement, confirming the matter had been “resolved peacefully”.

“An isolated incident occurred at Crown Melbourne involving one patron. The issue was resolved peacefully with the assistance of Victorian Police,” the statement read.

“As this is now a Police matter Crown will not be making any further comments.”

FIRST at 4:20 PM AEST | HUNDREDS of people have been evacuated from Melbourne’s Crown Casino as a major police operation unfolds.

Dozens of armed police, including officers from the city’s Special Operations Group are on the scene.

Witnesses told 3AW they saw up to 60 police officers run into the building while those inside were ushered onto the street.

There are unconfirmed reports that police had been called to reports of an armed robbery at the Casino.

The building has since been cordoned off and evacuees are being moved away from the scene.

Victoria Police have confirmed they are responding to an incident at the Casino, but say at this stage, it would be “inappropriate to comment further”.

Police are expected to update the media at 5.30pm (AEDT).
