UPDATE: Emergency declaration on northern Gold Coast revoked

UPDATE @ 4.00PM | Police have revoked an emergency declaration on the northern Gold Coast after being unable to find a man suspected of being armed.

Parts of Pimpama and Ormeau were locked down this morning as Police searched for the man in his 30s.

The wanted man had fled from the scene of a domestic violence incident in Upper Coomera on Monday night.


Police received information that he was in the Ormeau area and commenced a search around 9am.

Acting Inspector Kevin Grant says they believed he was armed.

“So at this stage, we believe it was a firearm, but we can’t confirm that,” Acting Inspector Grant said.

“We’re always concerned with members of the public with the safety when we get threats of this nature so we treat them all very seriously.”

Heavily armed officers from the  Special Emergency Response Team were called in from Brisbane to assist in the search along with general duties officers and Polair.

But after searching for hours, Police were unable to locate him, lifting the exclusion zone just after 3.30pm.

“Investigations at this stage are still ongoing to locate the male.

“At this stage, we don’t believe he is in the area from that search that we identified but investigations are continuing as to where he possibly could be.”

Ormeau State School was caught up in the lockdown with students forced to spend most of the day inside classrooms.

A major operation was launched at 3pm to allow parents into the exclusion zone to pick up their kids.

Inspector Grant admits the proximity of the school was a worry but that students remained safe at all times.

“The school was locked down for their safety. We also had pickup time done safely with the schools. So it’s always concerning but we saw the safety of the kids and also the parents are picking them up.”

EARLIER @ 3.00PM | An exclusion zone remains in place in parts of Pimpama and Ormeau as a Police manhunt continues in the area.

Heavily armed Police have been scouring streets and bushland for a man they believe could be armed.

The man in his 30s fled the scene of a domestic violence incident in Upper Coomera on Monday night.

Ormeau State School, which is inside the emergency declaration zone, has been in lockdown for the majority of the day.

Parents of students have taken to social media to express their frustration at the lack of information, particularly approaching school pick-up time.

Police have opened one lane of Mirambeena Drive to allow cars and school buses to pick up students one at a time.

A school representative is at the Police roadblock phoning ahead to ensure the right child is ready to be picked up.

Police officers are reportedly escorting students out of the school.

EARLIER@  11.45 AM | Police have made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act, as they hunt a man on the northern Gold Coast.

It’s understood officers have been looking for the man in his 30s since last night, after he threatened to kill his partner.

There are reports he’d gone as far as dousing a car and garage in petrol, at a home along Gallon Way in Upper Coomera.

He’d fled police from the scene overnight and is still on the run within the Pimpama/Ormeau area this morning.

Police are treating the man as if he is armed, but are yet to confirm whether or not he’s carrying a gun.

Police in bulletproof vests have cordoned off streets including Mirrambeena Drive near the Ormeau Train Station.

“Boundaries are in place north from Mirambeena Drive into Wharf Rd intersection with Pimpama Jacobs Well Rd, east from Pimpama Jacobs Well Road to Hotham Creek, south from creek line of Hotham Creek to Creek Street and west from Creek Street to Mirambeena Drive,” police advised in a statement.

“Members of the public are advised to avoid the area.”

While the Ormeau State School is in lockdown but reports that all their students are safe and working in their classrooms.

The man was involved in a domestic violence-related incident overnight, where he fled police at a home in Upper Coomera.

“A search is presently underway for a man in relation to a domestic violence matter,” a police statement reads.

“Police were called to a Gannon Way address at Upper Coomera overnight following a disturbance.

“The man involved left the scene.

“No one was physically harmed at the address.”

EARLIER @ 11.15 AM | Streets and a local school on the northern Gold Coast are reportedly in lockdown as a major police incident unfolds.

Nine news reports that Ormeau State School is in lockdown, and police in bulletproof vests have cordoned off several streets in the surrounding area.

A man is reportedly on the run in the area and is believed to be armed with a gun.

Police are yet to provide any information about the incident, or what action the local community should be taking at this time.

It’s understood an exclusion zone is in the process of being set up, but police are yet to confirm the boundaries.
