Man arrested after woman shot dead in NSW home

UPDATE 5:40AM | A 60-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested after a woman, believed to be his partner, was shot dead at a house in the NSW Lower Hunter Valley this morning.

Police said they were called to reports of shots fired at the Bella Street home at Horseshoe Bend in Maitland around 3.20am.

Emergency services raced to the scene and secured a perimeter around the house.


A 60-year-old man was arrested a short time later after walking out of the home, police said.

During a subsequent search of the property, officers located the body of a woman who had been shot inside the house. Her age was not immediately known.

A second woman who is believed to be aged in her early 30s was also found at the address, however, she was uninjured.

The 60-year-old man was taken to Maitland Police Station where he remains this morning, assisting detectives with their inquiries.

Although the deceased woman had yet to be formally identified at the time of writing, police confirmed in a statement she and the man were known to each other.

The man is believed to have been the woman’s partner.

A crime scene has been established and will this morning be examined by forensic officers.

Investigations by detectives from the Central Hunter Local Area Command and State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad are continuing.
