One dead, child seriously injured in horror crash

UPDATE at 4:45 PM | FIVE people have been rushed to hospital – some airlifted – following a horror crash that has left at least one person dead on the NSW Mid North Coast.

Police said three cars collided on the Pacific Highway at Nerong, north of Newcastle, just after 2pm on Sunday.

One person has been confirmed dead, while as many as five others, including two small children, have been rushed to hospital with injuries of varying degrees.

A fleet of emergency service vehicles, including seven ambulances and two helicopters were dispatched to the scene.

The children, aged 8 and 10, have both been taken to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital in serious conditions.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was used to airlift a critically injured woman aged in her 50s to hospital, while the Sydney Toll helicopter was used to transported a second patient.

It’s understood two people were initially trapped in the wreckage.

One person was extricated by emergency services while the second remained trapped almost two hours later.

Traffic on the Pacific Highway has been thrown into disarray, with northbound lanes closed entirely.

Motorists heading north through the area are being diverted off the highway via The Bucketts Way, while those heading south are moving slowly past the horrific site.

One person, believed to be the driver of one of the vehicles, has died at the scene, while a child from one of the vehicles has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

A second driver was seriously injured and remained trapped in one of the other vehicles at 3.30pm, police said.

The third driver escaped with only minor injuries and has been taken to Bulahdelah Hospital for mandatory testing.

Northbound lanes of the Pacific Highway are closed, while southbound traffic is slowly moving past the crash site.

Motorists heading north are being diverted around the scene at The Bucketts Way.

Drivers are being warned to expect delays and use alternate routes where possible.
