Bridge blocked as police in bulletproof vests swoop on Gold Coast suburb

UPDATE 5:00 PM | A MAN has been arrested following a dramatic stand-off with police on the Gold Coast.

Police in bulletproof vests swooped on a house at Ormeau Hills around 2pm on Saturday.

It’s understood a man at the address was armed with a gun and threatening to shoot himself.

Multiple police cars and vans raced to the scene.

Police blocked Landsdown Drive between Upper Ormeau Road and River Run Circuit while they responded to the incident.

Officers were seen putting on bulletproof vests while setting up a roadblock on the bridge.

Thankfully, police managed to negotiate a peaceful resolution and the man surrendered without incident.

A woman who was believed to be inside the house at the time escaped uninjured.

It is not yet known if the man was, in fact, armed with a firearm, as was initially reported to police.

It was first thought officers had swooped on the suburb in the search for a man on the run.

Multiple police cars and vans raced to the usually sleepy suburb between Yatala and Pimpama around 2.30pm.

Officers have blocked Landsdown Drive, which cuts through thick bushland and runs over the Pimpama River.

Police closed Landsdown Drive which cuts through bushland between River Run Circuit and Upper Ormeau Road

A woman who lives in the area told myGC she saw police setting up a barricade on the bridge around 2.40pm.

“We were trying to leave but they [police] wouldn’t allow us too,” the woman told myGC.

“… they are putting bulletproof vests on [and] told us to turn around because we can’t go that way”.

Details of the incident remain unclear.

Motorists are being advised to steer clear of the area.
