Broadbeach’s restaurant capital ready for grand re-opening

It’s the multi-million dollar face-lift that’s closed Broadbeach’s Surf Parade to traffic since August, but the street is gearing up for a grand re-opening next Saturday.

The upgrade, between Queensland Avenue and Victoria Avenue, has put a greater focus on foot traffic – reducing the road to just one lane in each direction, and widening the footpaths to make more seating area for the restaurants.

City of Gold Coast Councillor Paul Taylor says this first stage of the upgrade was a long time coming.

“We are in the restaurant capital of Queensland,” he said, “[but] we had a road here which was some 30 or 40 years old, and we’ve decided to do it up for the Commonwealth Games to really make it modern.

“The resurfacing was only a minor part. Underground the sewerage had to be done, telecommunications lines and electricity lines had to be done. So most of the money we spent has been underneath this asphalt.”

The result is infrastructure that has turned Broadbeach’s Surf Parade into an outdoor dining location for the 21st century. And now that that’s in place, the next step will be the beautification of the precinct or, as Cr Taylor describes it, the “icing on the cake”.

“We’ve got new lights  in here – LED’s – there’s going to be landscaped gardens, the awnings will be pulled down and council will put uniform ones up,” said Cr Taylor.

“The traders that have been disadvantaged for the last 3 months have been fantastic. I think they’ve seen the vision we all see that’s happening to Broadbeach here and they’re going along with it.”

Steven DeMaio is the general manager of Koi Restaurant, and described the road re-opening as “super exciting” for Broadbeach.

“Everyone’s super stoked super happy. At the start it was a bit awkward not knowing what to expect but now everyone you speak to says how great it looks.

“Broadbeach has a little spring in its step now and we’re going to take that through summer, and hopefully the customers will notice the energy,” he said.

1029 Hot Tomato will broadcast live from Broadbeach’s Surf Parade on Saturday 10 December with dining vouchers and discount card giveaways, roving entertainment, balloons and face-painting for the family.
