Police said the man then attempted to steal coins from the cash tray, but was ultimately unsuccessful.

He fled the bus on foot but was located and detained by police a short time later.

The bus driver, a 70-year-old man from New Farm, was treated by paramedics for minor injuries.

Police said the 37-year-old male passenger has since been charged with one count of robbery.

He is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court tomorrow.
