Businesses fearing the worst over imminent Gold Coast light rail extension

We’re inching closer to light rail works finally getting underway after a contract agreement was finally reached.

Newscorp reports that underground workers are about to begin on the $1 billion of the light rail from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads.

Contractors will be talking to local businesses and residents over the next six weeks, amid fears they’ll be economically impacted by the extension during its construction.

The Transport Minister has told Newscorp that his solution to this is to urge locals to continue to support those businesses once construction gets underway.

While Transport and Main Roads contractors will also be talking to businesses and residents along the route over the next six weeks to try and allay any fears.

It comes as the highly contentious stage four extension continues to receive heavy opposition from Palm Beach locals, with many now fighting against the rail running down the Gold Coast Highway to the Airport.

The next round of community consultation for that stage will begin next week on July 12.
