Byron Bay backpackers locked down as COVID case pops up ahead of Schoolies

A popular backpacker hostel in the middle of Byron Bay has had to be locked down after a positive Covid case was picked up there.

84 people have been deemed close contacts of the infection, and are now undergoing testing.

They’ll be isolated at the Aquarius Backpackers which was cordoned off by police on Wednesday, with all 84 people now in a seven-day lockdown in the premises.

They’re being supported with food, health and other support, according to Ballina MP Tamara Smith.

” Police are monitoring compliance 24/7 over the next 7 days.

“My thoughts are with everyone in that situation as it will be a tough time, and I will keep checking in to make sure that people are getting the support they need,” Ms Smith’s Facebook post reads.
