Camper impaled by branch while collecting firewood

A man is recovering in hospital after a freak camping accident north west of Brisbane.

The Beenleigh local had just arrived at the four-wheel drive camping park west of Gympie on Friday afternoon when he went to collect firewood.

As the man shook a tree, a dead branch fell on him, impaling his arm near the elbow.

The tip of the branch broke off leaving a large piece of wood still embedded in his arm.

Friends of the man, aged in his 30s, applied first aid to stop the bleeding before emergency services arrived.

The Sunshine Coast based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter airlifted the man to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
