Campus in lock-down after police officer shot dead at US University

UPDATE @ 1.50pm: A person has been taken into custody after a police officer was shot dead at the Texas Tech University in Lubbock on Monday night.

The University said the shooting happened after Texas Tech Police made a student welfare check.

“Earlier this evening, Texas Tech Police made a student welfare check,” Texas Tech said in a statement.

“Upon entering the room, officers found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Officers brought the suspect to the police station for standard debriefing. During this time, the suspect pulled a gun and shot an officer in the head. The officer is deceased”.

The campus was placed into lock-down, however it has since been lifted.

“The suspect has been apprehended at this time,” The University confirmed.

“Lockdown has been lifted on campus. Please continue to avoid Texas Tech Police Department and the north side of campus.”

EARLIER @ 12.15pm: A POLICE officer has been shot dead at the Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

The University confirmed the news on its website a short time ago, urging people at the campus to take shelter.

“This is an emergency notification from Texas Tech University. A shooting has been reported at the Texas Tech Police Department,” they wrote.

“At this time, the shooter is still at large. The campus is on lockdown. Take shelter in a safe location.”

In a statement, the University said the shooting occurred when campus police went to check on a student’s welfare.

“Earlier this evening, Texas Tech Police made a student welfare check,” the statement reads.

“Upon entering the room, officers found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Officers brought the suspect to the police station for standard debriefing. During this time, the suspect pulled a gun and shot an officer in the head. The officer is deceased”.

Local media say the shooter is a student.
