Caravan catches fire while being towed down the M1

A CARAVAN has burst into flames while being towed down the Pacific Motorway on the Gold Coast.

The caravan caught fire in the southbound lanes of the M1 as it neared the Helensvale Exit around 2pm.

The fire sent a thick plume of smoke billowing into the air and across the motorway, reducing traffic to a crawl.

Fire crews raced to the scene and were quick to douse the flames, which caused significant damage to the caravan.

The incident triggered heavy delays for motorists heading in both directions.

At one stage, traffic was backed up for several kilometres.

The delays have since eased through the area.
