Cardinal Pell returns to Vatican months after being cleared of child sex offences

Cardinal George Pell is expected to retreat back to the Vatican, just months after being cleared of child abuse allegations in Australia.

It’s understood the 79-year-old was working as Pope Francis’ finance minister, when he came to Australia in 2017 to go to court.

He then spent just over a year in jail after he was convicted of child sex abuse crimes.

Earlier this year the High Court acquitted him of the charges, and he was released.

Pell, once regarded as the third highest ranking Vatican official, will now return to Rome according to local media, and will fly out of Australia today.

His return coincides with the firing of Cardinal Angelo Becciu over an ongoing financial scandal.
