Cars damaged by fire in underground car park of Gold Coast apartment building

UPDATE: A FIRE which broke out in an underground car park of a Gold Coast apartment building overnight and damaged a number of cars is being treated as suspicious.

The blaze broke out in the car park of Whitecrests By The Sea on The Esplanade at Miami about 10.30pm on Wednesday night.

One witness told Gold Coast Weather & News Together emergency services arrived on scene within minutes of hearing what sounded like an explosion.

“The building had smoke billowing out of basement,” she said. “I heard a bit of a bang and within 10 minutes, the fire brigade was on scene and alarms were going off.”

Another witness said it was believed the fire started between two cars and the smell of burnt plastic and rubber was lingering throughout the area.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, however it is understood investigators are looking into whether it was deliberately lit.
