Future of popular 90s restaurant in the dark

SAY goodbye to cheesy bread and all-you-can-eat dessert toppings, popular 90s restaurant Sizzler is in quite a bit of financial strife.

It has been announced that Collins Foods will shut some of its Sizzler restaurants after a $10.4 million loss for the year, compared to a $14 million profit a year ago.

The company says it now regards Sizzler Australia as “non-core” to its strategic growth and it plans to close a limited number of Sizzler restaurants in the 2016 financial year.

“We no longer consider Sizzler to be a strategic growth prospect in Australia and therefore we will not be investing further capital,” said CEO Graham Maxwell.

Online bookmaker Sportsbet has pegged 2017-18 as the most likely date for the final Sizzler restaurant to close.

Kiyomi wins One Hat at Good Food Guide Awards

JUPITERS Hotel & Casino’s Kiyomi restaurant and bar has gained industry recognition claiming a prestigious chef’s hat last night at the 2016 Brisbane Times Good Food Guide Awards.

Having only been opened for 6 months, the cutting-edge Japanese restaurant, which is part of the property’s $345 million transformation, has been incredibly well received by reviewers and diners since opening its doors in December 2014.

Kiyomi’s internationally recognised Restaurant Executive Chef, Chase Kojima, was there to accept the award.

“The concept for Kiyomi was to have a restaurant that Gold Coast locals and visitors would like to come to, and come back to. It needed to be cool and exciting, and have food to match the level of Sokyo in Sydney but with more of a relaxed feel,” said Chase.

“The menu has been crafted around the delicious flavour ‘Umami’ that celebrates unique yet simple combinations which bring the natural flavours of the produce to life.

“I am incredibly humbled that Kiyomi has been recognised for this award and has been so well received by diners since it opened.”

Kiyomi serves a modern, yet distinctly Japanese menu and celebrates the experience of shared dining with an ‘Izakaya-style’ menu and a beverage menu including a wide variety of Japanese tap and bottled beers, sake, shochu cocktails and Japanese whiskies.

Dishes created by Chase for Kiyomi include Scampi with Foie Gras, White Soy, Apple and Mizuna Salad, as well as Binchotan Duck Breast with Beetroot, Sansho Pepper and Wasabi, and Salmon Robata with Ssamjang Miso and Watercress.

Food App ‘detectives’ head to the Gold Coast

DOZENS of ‘dining detectives’ are hitting the streets of the Gold Coast to search for the city’s best restaurants, cafes and cars.

They’ll be sourcing a swathe of data this week, including restaurants’ menus, photographs and opening hours, to be uploaded onto Zomato within the month.

Recently transitioned from Urbanspoon earlier this year, Zomato is a similar restaurant review site.

Zomato combines Urbanspoon’s user-generated content with expert content from Zomato’s own ‘feet on the street’, including curated collections such as ‘Trending this Week’, ‘Date Night’ and ‘Kickass Burgers’.

The platform also includes social features such as a personalised food journey timeline and inspiration from fellow foodies in the form of a diner’s newsfeed – meaning Gold Coast’s foodies will never be stuck for inspiration on where to eat out.

For Gold Coast’s restaurant owners, Zomato is aiming to help merchants more effectively connect with customers – and potential customers.
