CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Moment Gold Coast security guard is knifed by handbag thief

Dramatic vision has been released showing the confronting moment a teenage security guard is slashed with a knife by an alleged thief at a popular shopping centre on the Gold Coast.

The attack occurred around 5.30pm on Sunday, when a man stormed into a high-end store at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre in Broadbeach and grabbed three luxury handbags before running off.

One of the employees inside the store yelled out, prompting one of the centre’s security guards to give chase to the alleged thief who sprinted towards the food court.

The man then pulled out a knife, prompting the 19-year-old guard to grab a fire extinguisher in a bid to protect himself and other shoppers.

“The security guard armed himself with a fire extinguisher and gave chase, spraying the man with the fire extinguisher in an attempt to deter him from nearing members of the public,” police said.

“The man then lunged at the security guard’s head with the knife, however, the security guard used the fire extinguisher as a shield and the back of his left hand was wounded.”

The security guard was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital for a non-life-threatening laceration, while the alleged thief was last spotted running eastbound on Hooker Boulevard.

“Subsequent investigations have identified that the man arrived at the shopping centre in a vehicle with two other people; a man and woman,” Queensland Police said.

Detectives are now appealing for anyone who recognises the three people in the vision below, or anyone who may have captured dash-camera footage of the man along Hooker Boulevard around 5.40pm on Sunday, to come forward.
