Celebrities to be stranded on a island to raise funds for Variety Queensland

The Gold Coast’s most buoyant personalities will have a distinct sinking feeling this Friday when they take part in Variety Queensland’s annual Celebrity Island fundraising challenge.

Fourteen local personalities will be ferried out to a sandbank in the Broadwater by the Volunteer Coast Guard early on Friday morning where they will remain stranded until they raise enough money by mobile phone to earn a trip back to the mainland.

Some of the celebrities taking part this year include Channel 7 television Paul Burt, magician Matt Hollywood, 2015 Miss World Australia Tess Alexander, Comedian Danny McMasters, plus many more.

Variety Queensland’s Gael Chudleigh told myGC the event will raise much needed funds for sick disadvantaged and special needs Queensland children.

“Variety– the Children’s Charity – is best known for putting the fun into fundraising and this is another very clear example of that,” Ms Chudleigh said.

“Nothing we do is ever conventional and we make sure that all of those people who put their hands up to help us out have wonderful experiences.

“The tide will be coming in through the Seaway while the celebrities are on the sandbar, so there will certainly be some wet feet and knees involved, but hopefully they won’t be putting their hand up to be rescued,” she said.

Celebrity Island is a joint initiative of the Variety and 1029 Hot Tomato, with all of the sandbank action to be broadcast via live crosses during Flan and Emily Jade with Christo for Breakfast, and throughout the morning.

The fundraising challenge will begin at 6:35am on the sandbank is located off the newly-launched Stage 3 of the Southport Broadwater Parklands.
