Child airlifted to hospital after being run over by runaway ute

A 12-year-old girl has been airlifted to hospital after being run down by a runaway ute.

The child was at a theatre car park in Wentworth Street at Shellharbour about 6.20pm last night when she was struck by the vehicle after it began rolling backwards.

The girl’s father attempted to stop the ute before it ran over the girl and crashed into a street sign.

The youngster was rushed to Shellharbour Hospital before being airlifted to the Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick where she remains in a stable condition.

Police are investigating the inicident and are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it to contact them.
